If you are planning to go scuba diving in Nusa Penida, there is a good chance you have already heard about Crystal Bay. Located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island near Bali, Crystal Bay is one of the most famous dive sites in Indonesia and a must visit location for many divers exploring the area.
Known for seasonal Mola Mola sightings, clear water, coral reefs, and dramatic underwater landscapes, Crystal Bay diving offers something for both recreational divers and professional dive training.
At Dune Penida, Crystal Bay is also one of our key training sites for Divemaster and professional level courses thanks to its varied conditions, depth range, and real world diving environment.
Where is Crystal Bay?
Crystal Bay is located on the western side of Nusa Penida, a small island southeast of Bali, Indonesia. The dive site is around 45 minutes by boat from Sanur and only a short journey from the main dive centres in Nusa Penida.
The bay itself is famous for its white sand beach, crystal clear water, and sheltered coastline. Underwater, the dive site extends beyond the bay into deeper reefs, rocky outcrops, and current exposed areas that attract large marine life.
Because of its location along the nutrient rich waters between Bali and Lombok, Crystal Bay has become internationally recognised as one of the best places to dive in Nusa Penida.

What Can You See Diving at Crystal Bay?
Crystal Bay is best known for Mola Mola diving in Nusa Penida. During the season, usually between July and October, divers visit the site hoping to encounter the giant Oceanic Sunfish at deeper cleaning stations around the reef.
Mola Mola sightings are never guaranteed, but Crystal Bay remains one of the most reliable dive sites in Bali for seeing these unique fish.
Outside of Mola season, Crystal Bay still offers excellent diving with a huge variety of marine life including:
Green turtles
Reef sharks
Moray eels
Trevally
Barracuda
Nudibranchs
Cuttlefish
Large schools of reef fish
The reef itself features coral bommies, sloping reefs, rocky ledges, and sandy sections, making the site ideal for underwater photography and marine life spotting.
Crystal Bay Diving Conditions
Conditions at Crystal Bay can change quickly depending on tides, swell, and season. Visibility can often exceed 20 to 30 metres, especially during calmer periods, which is one reason the site became known as Crystal Bay.
However, divers should not underestimate the site. Like many dive sites around Nusa Penida, Crystal Bay can experience:
Strong currents
Down currents
Surge
Cold water thermoclines
Rapid condition changes
During Mola Mola season, water temperatures can drop significantly, sometimes reaching 18°C to 22°C in deeper areas.
For this reason, Crystal Bay is usually best suited for Advanced Open Water divers or divers comfortable diving in current. On calmer days, the sheltered parts of the bay can still provide enjoyable dives for less experienced divers.
Why Crystal Bay is Perfect for Divemaster Training
At Dune Penida, Crystal Bay is one of our favourite dive sites for Divemaster training in Bali and Nusa Penida.
The combination of topography, depth, navigation references, and changing conditions creates an ideal environment for developing professional diving skills.
Underwater Mapping Training
Crystal Bay is excellent for Divemaster mapping exercises. The site contains multiple depth contours, coral structures, sandy areas, and natural navigation points that challenge candidates to create accurate underwater maps.
Learning to map dive sites properly helps Divemaster trainees improve navigation, awareness, and site knowledge, all essential skills for professional divers.

Search and Recovery Training
The varied terrain at Crystal Bay makes it highly effective for Search and Recovery training.
Divemaster candidates can practice:
Expanding square searches
Lift bag deployment
Compass navigation
Team communication
Object recovery scenarios
The combination of reef and sandy bottom creates realistic conditions similar to those encountered during actual diving operations.
Deep Diver Specialty Training
Crystal Bay is also ideal for Deep Specialty training thanks to its gradual depth profiles and exposure to real environmental conditions.
Candidates learn how to:
Plan deeper dives safely
Monitor gas management
Handle thermoclines
Manage changing conditions
Maintain proper buoyancy at depth
Training in real conditions helps prepare divers for professional diving beyond the classroom.
Real Guiding Experience in Nusa Penida
One of the biggest advantages of training at Crystal Bay is that it is one of the most requested dive sites in Nusa Penida.
This allows Divemaster trainees to gain real experience assisting certified divers on one of Bali’s most famous dive sites. Guiding at Crystal Bay teaches candidates how to:
