Dive Computers for PADI Divemaster Training.


A dive computer is one of the most important pieces of equipment for any professional diver. During your Divemaster course in Bali, you will complete a high volume of dives, making reliability, ease of use, and clear information extremely important.

Modern dive computers are becoming increasingly advanced, with many now functioning as fully featured smart watches alongside their scuba diving capabilities. Brands such as Garmin, Suunto, and even Apple now offer smart watches with integrated diving features and dive modes.

At our dive centre, divers commonly use computers such as the Suunto Zoop, Suunto D5, and Garmin MK2 due to their durability, functionality, and ease of navigation.



What to look for in a scuba dive computer

  • Bluetooth connectivity for digital dive logging

  • Rechargeable battery systems

  • Smart watch functionality

  • Air integration compatibility

  • Easy to navigate menus

  • Strong warranty and servicing support

Rather than recommending one specific model, we advise divers to choose a computer based on their personal diving goals, budget, and long term needs.


Choosing the Best Compass for a Divemaster Course

Underwater navigation is a major part of every PADI Divemaster program. During your course, you will practise underwater navigation, search and recovery patterns, mapping exercises, and assisting student divers.

Many modern dive computers now include digital compasses built directly into the watch or computer. While these are excellent for recreational diving, we still strongly recommend Divemaster trainees carry a separate compass.

The reason is simple. For teaching navigation skills, conducting mapping projects, and general professional use, a standalone compass is significantly easier to use and demonstrate both underwater and during dry demonstrations on land.


Popular compass styles include:

  • Wrist mounted compasses

  • Console compasses

  • Computer integrated compasses

  • Retractable compasses

  • Mini clip compasses

For Divemaster candidates, we generally recommend larger wrist mounted models such as the Suunto SK8 due to their visibility and practicality.



DSMB and Reel for Diving in Nusa Penida

A DSMB (Delayed Surface Marker Buoy) and reel are essential safety items for scuba diving in Nusa Penida. Due to strong currents and drift diving conditions around the island, DSMB deployment is a skill you will use regularly throughout your Divemaster training.

Your DSMB should ideally:

  • Be at least 1.6 metres long

  • Be brightly coloured

  • Support oral inflation

  • Allow inflation via an octopus regulator

  • Allow inflation from a BCD low pressure inflator

For reels, simplicity is key. A reel between 15 and 30 metres is more than enough for recreational and professional diving in Bali. If you plan to participate in underwater mapping projects during your Divemaster course, a 30 metre reel can be particularly useful.



Dive Slates for PADI Divemaster Candidates

Dive slates are extremely useful during a Divemaster course and are regularly used for:

  • Underwater mapping

  • Search and recovery exercises

  • Dive briefings

  • Communication underwater

  • Recording notes during training

PADI Divemaster trainees should also purchase official PADI Divemaster slates. These contain useful references such as:

  • Dive briefing guidelines

  • Predive safety checks

  • Project AWARE information

  • Boat diving procedures

  • PADI ReActivate information

  • Skin diving course outlines

  • Blank training slates

Some packs also include Discover Scuba Diving cue cards, which can be very useful during internships and training programs.



Dive Knife or Cutting Tool

A cutting device is another important item for professional scuba divers. In Nusa Penida, cutting tools are most commonly used for removing fishing line, cable ties, or minor entanglements underwater.

The good news is that in Penida, a simple cutting tool is usually more than enough. You do not need a large or heavy dive knife for daily diving here.


When choosing a cutting device, focus on:

  • Rust resistance

  • Reliability

  • Easy accessibility underwater

  • Compact and streamlined design

Titanium coated or stainless steel tools are generally preferred for saltwater durability.



Wetsuits and Thermal Protection for Diving in Bali


Water temperatures around Nusa Penida can vary dramatically throughout the year, ranging from approximately 17°C to 29°C.

For colder months, we generally recommend a full length 5mm wetsuit. During warmer seasons, many divers are comfortable in a 3mm shorty wetsuit.

At Pro Divers Indonesia, our Divemaster trainees are free to use shop wetsuits at no additional cost. However, additional thermal layers can make a huge difference to your comfort during repetitive diving days.


Popular thermal options include:

  • Thermal rash guards

  • Base layers

  • Hooded vests

  • Neoprene hoods

Additional layers are one of the best investments you can make for long term diving comfort in Bali.



Additional Useful Divemaster Equipment

Other useful items for your Divemaster course include:

  • Double ended bolt snaps

  • Waterproof dry bags

  • Reef safe sunscreen

  • Cheap sun hats for pool sessions

  • Audio signalling devices such as whistles

These smaller accessories often make daily dive operations easier and more comfortable.
